Georgia Window Tint Laws (2026): What's Legal and What's Not

Georgia's tint laws are stricter than a lot of drivers realize. Here's the exact VLT percentages allowed, the medical exemption, and how to avoid a $2,000 ticket.

The Quick Reference

Georgia tint law (O.C.G.A. § 40-8-73.1) is measured in VLT — Visible Light Transmission. Lower VLT = darker tint.

### Passenger cars (sedans, coupes)

- Windshield: No tint below the AS-1 line (top 6 inches can be any darkness) - Front side windows: 32% VLT minimum (must let in at least 32% of light) - Back side windows: 32% VLT minimum - Rear windshield: 32% VLT minimum

### Multipurpose passenger vehicles (SUVs, trucks, vans)

- Windshield: No tint below the AS-1 line - Front side windows: 32% VLT minimum - Back side windows: any darkness (limo tint legal) - Rear windshield: any darkness (limo tint legal)

### Reflectivity limit

- Tint must not be more than 20% reflective on any window. This rules out true mirror/chrome tints on street-driven cars.
